Bert Mertens est né à Louvain (Belgique) en 1955. Après tout un parcours professionnel dans le milieu médical, en août 2018, il découvre la peinture à l’huile. C’est le début d’une carrière artistique sans formation académique mais non sans références.
Il s’épanouit dans la peinture minutieusement réaliste exécutée à la main seule (non technologiquement assistée). Au départ du visible rendu dans la précision du détail, il fait émerger une complexité, un éclat ou un humour restés inaperçus. Il invite à découvrir l’insolite au sein du familier, la profondeur sous les surfaces, l’être sous l’apparaître.
Il s’intéresse aux marques du vécu des hommes. Il oriente le regard là où on ne le porte pas spontanément. Un vieux garage encombré, un chantier en désordre, un dépôt sauvage d’immondices valent-ils un coup d’œil ? Bert Mertens y observe la densité de vie sous les apparences, la poésie visuelle qui survient des jeux de lumière ou de reflets, de la proximité des couleurs, des jeux de lignes et de formes.
La qualité de son travail a été couronnée en 2024 par le Prix Jos Albert de l’Académie Royale de Belgique (Classe des Arts).

Bert Mertens was born in Louvain (Belgium) in 1955. After a long professional career in the medical field, in August 2018, he discovered oil painting. It is the start of an artistic career without academic training but not without references.
He thrives in meticulously realistic painting executed solely by hand (without technological assistance). Starting from the visible rendered in the precision of detail, it brings out a complexity, a brilliance or a humor that has remained unnoticed. It invites us to discover the unusual within the familiar, the depth beneath the surfaces, the being beneath the appearance.
He is interested in the marks of human experience.
It directs the gaze where one does not spontaneously look at it. Is an old cluttered garage, a messy construction site, a wild dump of rubbish worth a look? Bert Mertens observes the density of life beneath appearances, the visual poetry that arises from the play of light or reflections, the proximity of colors, the play of lines and shapes.
The quality of his work was honored in 2024 with the Jos Albert Prize of the Royal Academy of Belgium (Class of Arts).
