Les œuvres de Moon-Pil SHIM se présentent, au premier abord, comme des boîtes (…). Mais ce qui étonne le plus ce sont les couleurs – et la présence du blanc traité lui aussi comme une couleur. Elles transparaissent au travers de plexiglas transparents ou translucides. Ces plages de couleurs répandues de manière uniforme et lisse sont le plus souvent traversées d’une ou plusieurs lignes colorées (soit extrêmement fines, soit en étroites bandes), tracées au cutter dans la couleur puis à nouveau colorées mais différemment au rottring. Parfois, des accidents dans leur tracé sont volontairement conservés pour éviter une approche trop mécanique du dessin. Ces lignes, espacées ou rapprochées, découpent et modulent les aplats, introduisant un rythme dans les relations de couleurs et d’espaces. A la stabilité des espaces colorés rectangulaires, elles ajoutent une perception dynamique, ouverte, suivant ces horizontales. (…)

Moon-Pil SHIM’s works appear, at first glance, as boxes (…). But what is most surprising are the colors – and the presence of white also treated as a color. They show through transparent or translucent plexiglass. These areas of color spread in a uniform and smooth manner are most often crossed by one or more colored lines (either extremely fine or in narrow bands), drawn with a cutter in the color then colored again but differently with rottring. Sometimes, accidents in their drawing are deliberately preserved to avoid an overly mechanical approach to the drawing. These lines, spaced or close together, cut and modulate the flat tints, introducing a rhythm in the relationships of colors and spaces. To the stability of the rectangular colored spaces, they add a dynamic, open perception, following these horizontals. (…)
