Si son approche est un peu agressive, car l’artiste s’arme d’une tronçonneuse et s’attaque directement au tronc, il cherche pourtant sereinement à percer les secrets de la nature de l’arbre.
Il impose au bois ses exigences et sa volonté artistique tout en le respectant. Sans fioritures, il l’équarrit, le calcine afin de le doter d’un bel épiderme noirci, il le débite en tranches et, ensuite, reconstitue son altière verticalité originelle par un habile jeu de superpositions au rendu brut et archaïque mais toujours avec le désir d’être en osmose avec la matière vivante.
Alors, de cette tension entre la nature de l’homme et de l’arbre germent la magie et l’harmonie du travail de Jhemp Bastin.

If his approach is a little aggressive, because the artist arms himself with a chainsaw and attacks the trunk directly, he nevertheless calmly seeks to uncover the secrets of the nature of the tree.
He imposes his demands and his artistic will on the wood while respecting it. Without frills, he squares it, calcines it in order to give it a beautiful blackened epidermis, he cuts it into slices and, then, reconstitutes its haughty original verticality by a skillful play of superpositions with a crude and archaic rendering but always with the desire to be in osmosis with living matter.
So, from this tension between the nature of man and the tree germinates the magic and harmony of Jhemp Bastin’s work.
