« Cette création inclassable et d’une originalité singulière prolonge et subvertit les deux sources auxquelles elle s’alimente. Elle reconduit et détourne la tradition des lettrés chinois liée à la calligraphie, en introduisant l’abstraction dans les œuvres, et en les affranchissant de toute source littéraire. Simultanément, elle congédie les facilités et les poncifs de l’art “moderne” : au nom de son exigence éthique et esthétique, Gao Xingjian revendique l’humilité exigeante de sa démarche ; il refuse la mise en scène du peintre, son exposition médiatique comme les stéréotypes véhiculés par un certain discours actuel sur la création. Ses œuvres sont naturellement destinées à être vues, mais elles ne visent à aucune démonstration spectaculaire ; elles s’inscrivent plutôt dans une logique de contemplation qui sollicite l’intériorité du spectateur. »

“This unclassifiable creation of singular originality extends and subverts the two sources from which it draws. It renews and diverts the tradition of Chinese scholars linked to calligraphy, by introducing abstraction into the works, and freeing them from any literary source. Simultaneously, she dismisses the facilities and clichés of “modern” art: in the name of her ethical and aesthetic demands, Gao Xingjian claims the demanding humility of her approach; he refuses the staging of the painter, his media exposure as well as the stereotypes conveyed by a certain current discourse on creation. His works are naturally intended to be seen, but they are not intended for any spectacular demonstration; rather, they are part of a logic of contemplation which solicits the interiority of the spectator.”
